Deep Well Water Level Monitoring Questions

What is the "static water level" and how do I measure it?

It is the level of water in the well under non-pumping, undisturbed conditions. It is best measured in the early morning before the pump turns on.

How do I determine the "pumping water level" and drawdown?

This is the level the water drops to while the pump is operating, which helps calculate how much water is available, known as the drawdown.

How often should I monitor my well water level?

The PTLevel can provide real-time monitoring as frequently as every 4 minutes. It is recommend that drilled well water levels be checked at least monthly. "One of the key elements of well monitoring is to record water level measurements on a regular basis. Both non-pumping and pumping water levels should be taken at least a monthly basis. Changes in the non-pumping level or "static" water level may signal possible aquifer depletion, while changes in the pumping level may indicate a possible decline in well performance as a result of screen plugging." (Recommended by Agriculture Canada)

What does a steady decline in water level mean?

This can indicate a dropping aquifer (due to drought or over-pumping) or a failing pump.

Can water level sensors send alerts at high or low levels?

Yes, the PTLevel can send SMS or email notifications when water falls below a certain level or rises above your alert point.

What is the accuracy of water level sensors?

Our submersible stainless steel pressure sensor is rated for maximum 40 PSI, equaling 275 KPA (1 meter of water is around 9.81 KPA) It is normal to have ±3% due to environmental changes and the tolerances of the sensor.

How can I monitor the water level without pulling the pump?

The PTLevel with deep well stainless steel sensor has a low profile design at 29m diameter which can be lowered into your drilled well without removing your pump.

What if my drilled well is deeper than 70'?

The Deep Well PTLevel measures water levels up to 70 feet. If your well is deeper than that, it can still be used effectively; just keep in mind that any water below 70’ will not be monitored.

How it works: You can still track usable water above the 70’ range by adjusting your settings.

Example: If your well water typically sits at 50’ and drops lower during use, you can set your tank depth to 20’ (70’ – 50’).

  • When the water level is at 50’, calibrate the system to read 100% (full)

  • At 60’ depth, the system will read approximately 50%

  • At 70’ or deeper, the system will read 0%

This setup allows you to monitor drawdown and understand how much usable water remains above the 70’ limit.

Can I measure smaller tanks with a Deep Well PTLevel?

Yes, the Deep Well PTLevel can be used in both small and large tanks. It is available in 13’, 30’, and 70’ sensor lengths, giving you flexibility across a wide range of applications.

The cable length cannot be shortened or extended, but excess wire is not an issue; you can safely coil it out of the way inside the tank if needed.

Built for durability, the Deep Well PTLevel is our most robust liquid level monitoring solution. Each unit is made in small batches, with epoxy-coated circuit boards and rigorous testing to ensure reliable performance in demanding environments. Backed by a 2-year warranty, it’s ideal for chemical tanks, industrial applications, and deep drilled wells.

My drilled well has a lot of impurities, will that be a problem with monitoring it?

Impurities in your drilled well won’t interfere with accurate monitoring. The Deep Well PTLevel is designed to perform reliably in challenging water conditions, including the presence of salt, sulfides, chlorides, gases, particulates, and even elevated temperatures.

Its durable stainless steel transducer sensor is built to handle these environments without compromising performance. Both the Deep Well PTLevel and standard PTLevel can measure any liquid with a consistent density, making them ideal for a wide range of well and water monitoring applications.
